I had a lot of extra space to play with, so I busted out some quotes and added some flair with the stars.

Again, a lot of white space to make an interesting layout. The original picture was of the two students bowing at each other, so I decided to use their direction and split them with the text.

I knew what the general layout of the page would be even before we got the story, so I asked the photographer for this illustrated feature shot. I did NOT write the headline, ;).

It took a while, but I turned what would have been an awkward page layout into something that flowed pretty well, while showing the reader some of the story's emotion.

It's customary to run a "Welcome" or "Welcome Week" banner across the front page during the first week of school. I didn't have a good picture yet, so I sent out the photographer on deadline to get a shot of someone who was moving in. The other thing I'm proud of is the package on the right side of the page.
I chose to run a teaser skybox across the bottom because there was only one story on the front, and I wanted to give readers a glimpse at what was inside without cumbersome graphics or pictures.

I took a stock photo, added a gradient and the fun lettering to make this front-page graphic. This issue was, by far, the most quickly circulated in my three years at The Northeastern. It seemed like the readers really caught on to the eye-popping bright green colors, as well as the topical content.

Probably my favorite design, and one that has a story.
I like this because of the left-column banner bust out. The story goes like this: This page one would have been less busy, but about an hour before print deadline, we got news that the president of the university had a heart attack, which threw my design into whack. It came out all right, though.
